Service Description: ABSTRACT The Class B Roads dataset represents known and documented Class B road corridors, historic county roads, and transportation routes associated with Cache County jurisdiction. The dataset serves as a working inventory of roads that have been researched through historical records, surveys, maps, field investigations, and other supporting documentation. The layer is maintained to support county operations, transportation planning, historical preservation, road administration, Class B Road funding activities, and ongoing research related to road status and jurisdiction. LINEAGE The Class B Roads dataset was inherited by the Cache County GIS Division in 2007 upon the formation of the division. The original GIS data was compiled by Larry Brunson and maintained in two primary datasets named "cache_b_Larry" and "FS_Class_B_Roads." These datasets were developed through extensive historical research and were used primarily to support Class B Road funding submissions to the State of Utah. The information was also utilized by Cache County Road Superintendent Darrell Erickson for road administration, maintenance planning, and historical road reference. Following the establishment of the GIS Division, the two datasets were reviewed, reconciled, and merged into a single Class B Roads inventory. Duplicate road segments were evaluated, geometry was refined where appropriate, and attributes were standardized to create a unified countywide dataset. Since 2007, the dataset has been continuously maintained and updated as new information becomes available. Sources used in the development and maintenance of this layer include original federal survey records and field notes dating to the 1850s, General Land Office survey plats, historic maps, aerial photography, county road committee records, county commission records, historical maintenance documentation, road petitions, rights-of-way records, field investigations, GPS observations, consulting surveyor research, retired surveyor interviews, eyewitness accounts, and information provided by long-time residents familiar with historical road alignments. The dataset serves as a catalog of roads associated with historic county transportation corridors, Class B Roads, RS2477 rights-of-way research, and roads that may be subject to current or historical county jurisdiction. Road alignments and attributes are updated as additional evidence is discovered and evaluated. The location and status of some road segments represent the best available interpretation of historical documentation and physical evidence at the time of compilation and may be revised as new information becomes available.
